What's up? Postal rates increasing for some magazines and not others, so harder for us to get variety of news? Postal regulators have accepted a scheme designed in part by lobbyists for the Time Warner media conglomerate. In short, mailing costs for mega-magazines like Time Warner's own Time, People and Sports Illustrated will go up only slightly or decrease. But smaller publications like The Nation will be hit by an enormous rate increase of half a million dollars a year. For The Nation, $500,000 a year is a lot of money. Believe me, I know. I’ve been working at the magazine for over 20 years. The pay ain’t great. But there are few media outlets that allow their writers and reporters the freedom to go beyond the headlines and take on the powers that be—to ask inconvenient questions and pursue uncomfortable truths. But starting July 15, 2007, The Nation will face this whopping postal rate hike. Not to be melodramatic, but this rate increase is a threat to democratic discourse. Why should magazines that can afford high-powered lobbyists receive preferential treatment? This rise in mailing costs will make it harder for the magazine to deliver the investigative reporting and independent-minded journalism upon which you depend. (Take my word; I see the editors and publishing people in our New York office freaking out about this postal rate hike and discussing possible cutbacks.) The magazine is fighting this corporate-driven, unfair and anti-democratic increase as best it can. It has joined forces with conservative publications in an attempt to beat back the rigged rate structure. (Imagine Katrina vanden Heuvel and Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, working together!) But even if we “win”—which, I’m told, is a long shot—The Nation will still face hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional postage. Source: David Corn, The Nation
Where can I find out insurance rates for US postal services with letters to the UK? Each envelope would contain an item worth around the $30 mark, but as they would be going international I want them to be insured. I can find UPS rates, but not USPS rates for insurance. I looked at the Express mail, but I noticed a bit of small print which says that certain items are excluded from their insurance, jewelry amongst them, which is one of the things I do want insurance for.
Mailing out bussiness letters and postal rates? Does anyone know if there are any cheaper options then buying stamps from the post office? Say I want to mail out 500-1000 letters, they would all be the same weight, what options do I have? I know that a bussiness I worked at before has done this but they all had to be the same weight but I do nt remember what they did or prices ect.
YEE-HAW postal rates in the USA? How much money does a "standard business letter" cost nowadays? I am mailing my telephone bill from Texas to "Yee-haw!" Tennessee. I haven't snail-mailed letters for so long and I have let all the media attention about rises in postal rates "fly overhead" since the rise was announced in the 1960's about rising above 10c's. %how far will my bill go if I pay with this 10c stamp? If not far enough, how many coins should I tape on the outside of the envelope?
Is on-line tracking included with flat rates boxes from The Postal Service? I am looking to sell my old iPod Touch on ebay and i've read how its best to get tracking and to make sure the buyer has to sign for it on delivery. I am looking to use one of the USPS flat rate boxes and was wondering if I can get these features on the flat rate box. I am not shipping international.
New postal rates? Does anyone know the new postal rates in total. I already know that prices will be 41 for a regular stamp, but how much for each additional ounce.
UK postal rates? I have to send (within the uk) an A5 size bubble wrap protected type envelope containing a letter and a cd. It hardly weighs anything. Royal Mail postal rates seem to be incomprehesible. Would you just chance it and stick one first class stamp on it, or should i go get it weighed? (and queue up for a couple of days in the post office)
OMG! Postal Rates going up again....were you aware of this? Yes, starting tomorrow Monday May 14 the government takes another bite out of our wallet. THE HEADLINE: Americans will pay 2 cents more to mail a first-class letter beginning May 14, but they will be able to buy a new type of stamp that could shield them from future price increases. THE STORY: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-19-postal-rates_N.htm more: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/13/mail.shape.ap/index.html It's true this is not NEW news but... Until I was reminded this morning by reading the news article, I had my mail ready to go with the OLD postage of 39 cents. (then I had to go hunting for some 1 cent stamps I know I had stashed...somewhere)
Is it possible to program the new postal rates in a Pitney Bowes machine without paying a $54 charge? My small office has a Pitney Bowes mailstation that we use for office mail. We don't send out a great deal of mail, but the postage meter is worth the $20/month rental fee for the efficiency in processing the mail we do send out. A few weeks ago, we received notice from PB that the new postal rates were going to go into effect May 12, and that we need to download the updates for our meter to work. Oh, and that they are going to charge us $54 for the privilege of receiving this download. In the grand scheme of things, $54 isn't a great deal of money, but I find this galling. No one went out of their way to mention this charge when we agreed to rent the machine, and we're talking about updating two or three numbers, max-- 99.9% of our mail is first class letters of one or two ounces. Is it possible to program the meter with the new rates manually?
How many of you have received advertizing mailings from US Postal Service? In the last few weeks I have received 3 "keeping you Posted" cards form the US Postal Service. It tells us how we can handle our postal needs. Now I have been able to take care of my postal needs on my own with no problem. What is a problem is, that when I go to the post office there is no place to park, I wait in a long line and am finally waited on by surely clerks. Our postal rates were raised not long ago. How many more cards do you think they will send out before they raise the rates again. Is it really neccessary for our post office to send out cards telling us how to conduct our business?

Postal rates keeps going up and up...? I know like everything else but our local courier does not even get the right mail in our box, our mail goes to our neighbors a half mile down the road, I get a neighbor that lives one half mile the other way. I have complained written letters til I am blue in the face it does not matter who I talk to at the post office nor their bosses. My brother works for the Post Office he told me rates keeps going up because people are paying on line, so they up our rates for those that don't. Well I am now. The so called forever stamp is increasing too. If they did their jobs right got my bills to wherever they need to be on time this is what they get paid for I would not complain. Our house payment has been late 2 times now..we mail our payment 12 days in advance. This hurts our credit for being late, I tell the worthless Post Office and I get a "Sorry about that"...isn't that an easy thing to say...?

I think the postal carrier did stamp it "VIA AIR MAIL," but I'm not sure. Is a rate of 0.08 / oz. an AIR MAIL rate or is it the s-l-o-w (by boat) rate for a large 3.8 oz envelope en-route to the Netherlands (Holland) from U.S.A?
