What are some ways to catch the mail coming through a garage mail slot?

We're renting a house, and the garage door has a mail slot. Unfortunately, it means our mail ends up all over the ground, and we end up driving over it when we come home. We want to install something on the inside of the garage door to catch it all. Does anyone know of anything out there that we can just install?

  1. Try using the top part (cage part) of a hamster cage or the like. Use screws to affix it with the open part towards the door. You should be able to put your hand through the door of the cage to retrieve your mail. Good Luck!
  2. Wait about 10 feet from the door at the time the mailman comes, then, a you hear him drop it in the box run about 3 feet and make a dive for it! Just be careful not to crash into the door... That could promote some problems.
  3. Use strong tape and put an empty shoe box there. Most mail will fall in as most mailpeople do not shove the mail in hard.
  4. Try putting a hook into the door and hanging a basket or something similar on the hook. When the garage door is raised, the basket should be able to "swivel" on the hook and stay level as the garage door opens. This way the mail will (or should) stay in the basket even as the door rises. The only other thing I would suggest is something like what one of the previous posters suggested with the cage. Either way, you want something enclosed so that the mail doesn't fall out. You could also buy a free standing mailbox to set in front of the garage and leave a note for the mail man to put the mail in that instead of the slot. The kind I have seen are cast iron (or at least look like cast iron), stand about 3 feet high and have a door in the back that locks with a key.
  5. I had the same problem once and I stapled a straw basket over the mail slot. It was more of a structured straw bag and the mail was gathered inside. I just stapled across the top of the bag which was placed at the top of the mail slot but left the front of the bag (facing into the door) free
