Where can I get a free Non Web Based E-Mail Client?

I just got my new windows Vista Laptop and I Tried to use the new "Windows Mail" Program so I opened it up and entered my information only to be told that "hotmail and other web based e-mail clients" are not supported. Can you please tell me where i can make an account that isnt web based for free? Thank-you In advance. Can you tell me how to set it up with wondows mail?
