Is it better to run a CLIENT BASED e-mail account (THUNDERBIRD) than ANY direct online service ?

Hi, I am curious about client based e-mail accounts in this case Thunderbird from Mozilla. What are the benefits? According to what I know the client based accounts save the info your computer as well as in your servers? Why not just go to the on line accounts directly? Perhaps I think this way because I am always connected to the Internet so I don't see why the client based would be of any use. What would you recommend?

  1. Spam control is more configurable. How often to check is more configurable. I am using IncrediMail and I love the things you can do with it that you cant do direct. But I have to put up with a little advertising. I have used Thunderbird. Also Outlook Express with Mailwasher. It is easier to backup the things you want to keep. Also to organize them.
