What is the purpose of that little fringe around the wheel wells of UPS semis?
I see UPS trucks (the semis, not the delivery vans) on the highway and they all seem to have this little fringe over the wheels. Is there a purpose to it? It's how I identify a UPS truck - sometimes instead of the logo on the side!

- They are there to keep your car from getting hit with rocks and debris. They don't work 100% of the time, but they do help.
- to collect water from the spinning tires and let it drip instead of mist all over the vehicles behind them.
- It's not for rocks etc. but only to cut down the amount of spray in wet weather. The fringe as you call it helps keep the spray under the wheel arches and also it doesn't wear the vehicles tires when it contacts the rubber. It makes quite a difference to you as a motorist when you pass a large truck in the wet.
