Postal Letter

If you put a letter in your mailbox, will the mailman pick it up and bring it to the post office to mail it?

I live in Illinois and need to get a letter to Brooklyn, NY and wasn't sure if you really have to go to a post office to mail letters to a different state or if you can just do it from your own mailbox.
