- what kind of job. for mail handler, clerk, and carrier, you first have to wait for either new york metro, or westchester, or long island to announce an open exam. they will announce the next test in the civil service newspaper "the chief". once they announce the test, you must go to a post office in that district to apply. you fill out the form at that post office, and you give it to the window clerk. then you wait...... you get a letter in the mail telling you the date to take the test. don't move, change your address, or do anything that will cause you to not get that letter. so you get the letter, and now yo go take the test. once you take the test, you wait. you get your results by a letter. the higher you score, the earlier you get into the post office. the fill up the vacancies they want, and everybody else gets put on a waiting list. the earlier you get in, the earlier your seniority begins. so they call you for an interview and a medical checkup, orientation, etc. and you are in. you will probably work "part time" with "flexible" hours. you also get higher pay than the "full time" "regular" hours people. flexible hours means they can make you work any hour they want. night, day, whatever. it will take years for you to move up the ladder. but once you get the chance, make a move. the usps tries to hire internally for many of it's low level administrative and office jobs (secretary, janitor) etc. once you get a chance, apply, send a resume, whatever it takes, transfer when you get a chance. ----- the second way to get into the post office is to work irregular hours during the holiday rush during christmas, and thanksgiving. but usulaly this is temporary work. ---- the third way to get into the post office is to apply for the specialty and technical jobs that require a resume, etc. you have to talk to human resources for that. ---- the post office likes to say they like to hire internally, but really, they like to keep people not moving around. most civil service jobs are like that. brain dead.
