Yes. They don't have the right to touch your animal, I mean you wouldn't expect them to throw salt at your babies face if it were yearning attention, would you?

Though my dog has never attacked anyone...if he attacked the mailman and the mailman sprayed him with salt out of defense...then and only then would it be ok.

Do they even make "Salt Spray?" I think you are referring to "Pepper Spray"...correct? Well, either way...Yes...I would be angry, but not if the mailman was in fear of my dog biting him.

no,,I'm sure he felt that he was going to be bitten or attacked , I'm sure he did not get up in the morning with a wish he can hurt someones pet,,,would you get mad if your kid came home with his face torn off because someones pet was trusted,,,dogs like to bite mailmen,,,you might have done the same thing if you where in his position,,,salt might irritate your dog,,,but a trip to the hospital ,,,,maybe including rabbie shots is no joke
its better than spraying them with pepper spay,,and they do carry pepper spay just for dogs,,,

As long as it was in self defense & not just because, it is completely ok. My father used to work as a meter reader when he was a young man & he was frequently attacked by dogs that were often loose around the yard. He would ask them to chain the dogs up or to pen them up somewhere, but many didn't. One time my father got a huge chunk of flesh taken out of his leg. If he hadn't defended himself with what he had (I think it was mace), there was a good chance the dog could have killed him. I love animals, but if any household pet is threatening you & you are just there doing your job (a job that the owners knew full well that you were going to be there doing), you have every right to defend yourself. It infuriates me the amount of owners who swear "my dog is harmless". Every dog has people they don't like for some random reason & every dog should be chained to the house or put in a pen instead of being allowed to roam free. If you have to have your mail delivered to the door, DON'T CHAIN OR PEN YOUR DOG UP IN THE FRONT FREAKING YARD!!! Many dog attacks are from people who assume that Fido won't harm someone b/c they haven't growled or barked before. Almost every single one of those people ended up having to put Fido to sleep. They lost their dogs when all they had to do is make sure to keep their dogs penned. If you can't keep the dog in the pen or on his chain, then maybe you shouldn't have the dog outside at all unless you can personally supervise him. Bottom line: If at any time a person feels threatened by a dog's presence, they have the right to defend themselves. It is the duty of the dog's owner to keep the dog away from any & all parts of the yard that a public servant may need to access. It *is* the duty of the public servant to notify the homeowner if they need to access a part of the yard (i.e. the back yard) that isn't normally accessed, but if it is someone like a mailman that comes every day you need to keep that area free & clear of your canine. There is no excuse for this & you can be sued in a court of law if s/he is attacked. You can have your animal taken away from you & terminated if the court believes that it is a threat against society. 90% of the time the courts do insist upon putting the dog to sleep in cases like this. This is not cruelty. This is a person's right to defend themselves. Maybe I'll get a few thumbs down for this answer, but I speak from experience. My father was attacked by dogs & I was attacked by a so called "harmless" dog. At my job I've seen countless children & people come in after being savaged by "harmless" dogs. Many of them had permanent & severe scarring or physical damage. Unless you want that to happen to you or to someone else, keep your dogs secured.
Hi Bruce, so your mail man sprayed your dog with salt-that's terrible, I can see why you would be frustrated. That said, I may need more information about how this actually happened- was it out of malice or was he pulling out of your drive and accidentally salted your pup? I think if it was out of malice you should report it to the USPS customer service-I am sure they do not want their employees being careless or inconsiderate. However, if it was the latter, and you feel comfortable enough talking to your mail man, I would suggest asking him to be more careful in a friendly way-I'm sure you know the way I mean. I do not think getting mad will really resolve the issue but taking some steps to make sure it doesn't happen again may. Hope this helped and good luck!
They have every right to spray your animal if they feel threatened in any way. Some postal people are naturally afraid of dogs after getting bitten by a dog while working.
no! in the states its a federal offence to impede or physically waylay the united states postal service (i'm irish btw) in britain with royal mail if you cant keep your mutt chained up or inside the house apart from taking it from walkies, your being done a service that you! pay for so therefore it is any postal workers right to either not to deliver your mail or to spray the dog with pepper spray if he/she feels threatened by an un-tethered dog even though its on your own property.
