Applying for FEDEX Courier job. I got a DUI late 1996. Do I have to disclose it?

I was arrested for DUI in October 1996 and convicted January 1997. Do I have to put it down on my application and/or disclose it since it is over 10 years old for FedEX courier job? Other than that I have a clean record. I even recieved an award for driving safely in the Army.

  1. If FedEx asks if you EVER had a DUI then you have to disclose it. If the Army gave you a pass, you are probably OK.
  2. I don't know but I would think not. One way to check it, is to get a copy of your driving record, from DMV. That would tell you what is on it and see if the DUI is on it. If it is tell them before they get the records. If you don't tell them and it is there it could cause you the job. On the other hand if it doesn't show up then don't tell them.
  3. Only if it ask directly ask, have you ever had a DUI. Its already off your record since it was over 7 years ago.
  4. If they ask you, answer honestly. There will still be a record of your DUI conviction with the court, even though your driving record may not show it, so it could come up in a background check.
  5. Visit the website DUI expunge.com, which states as follows: DUI Expunge Many Americans over the past 20 years have been arrested for DUI, criminal, disorderly, and municipal ordinance offenses. They may include your neighbors, friends and loyal church worshipers. The police keep a record of all arrests and convictions, even if 20 years old. These "secrets of the past" will soon be open to anyone in your state including credit agencies. Anybody could ask the state police for a person's criminal record, even arrests with not guilty findings. Allowing access to a person's old criminal conviction or arrest record could open the door for discrimination against someone who now is a productive, respected, and law abiding citizen. Dui records pertaining to an individual's DUI arrest are typically registered in both criminal databases and department of motor vehicle information systems. DUI records can be accessed by several different parties. Having DUI records in one's background can affect a person's life in many ways for years after the DUI incident. A DUI is a criminal offense that is perpetrated by individuals who are caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This offense can be charged as a misdemeanor or as a felony depending on the specific circumstances surrounding the incident. Factors that can enhance the sentence in a DUI case can include: repeat offenses, a relatively higher blood alcohol level, the involvement of children in the incident, the involvement of accidents or injuries caused as a result of the incident, or if excessive speeding was involved. These types of factors can increase the likelihood of harsher penalties and more incriminating DUI records. If you qualify for expungement, git 'er done! You sound like a good candidate, esp in view of that safe driving award. Good luck!
  6. Don't lie by leaving it out. They will find it anyway when they do your background check. Be honest.
