What web-based email provider is easiest to teach to beginners?

I've taught a very basic, introductory class for internet and email beginners a few times using Yahoo! email as the basis for my class. I've been an avid Yahoo! email user myself for over 10 years, but it doesn't seem to be the best choice for absolute beginning emailers (many of the students are seniors and people who've never used email before at all). What free, web-based email provider would you suggest for instructing an introductory class? Also, what makes the provider easy to use for beginners?
