Postal Letter

Is Postal work a Dead in job?

My fiance wants to take this job from the post office. She's fresh out of college, the job pays $57,000 a year plus health, dental, vacation and maternity. I work part time as a Tarot reader and go to college still (she's older than me). the Tarot job is $18 an hour. and I get on average $200 a week. our monthly expenses are a bit less than $2000 a month after we move from our current place. We see this situation as fine. However her mother is protesting that the postal job will not get her anywhere so she doesn't want her to apply to it. She suggested looking at Waitressing jobs but that sounds more dead end than clerical post office work ever could be. but is post office work really a dead end job?

  1. Well, within the post office you can keep moving up in the ranks, always getting a pay raise to go along with a raise in position, until some day when you're middle-aged you could conceivably become the postmaster of a good-sized post office. The salary for that job is quite good, and the working conditions are not too bad, so ... would you consider that a "dead end"? I'd consider it having and keeping a steady job. In my opinion, that's a *good* thing. Your fiancee is the only one who can make this decision, though. You can't make it for her ... and her mother *certainly* can't decide for her. (I agree about the waitressing thing, too, btw.)
  2. My dad retired after 20 years in the post office, his retirement is really good.
  3. my parents have been at the post office forever. they dont like it very much, but it pays very very well. she could work there well looking for a better job, or continuing her education for ultimately, a better job. nothing's "dead end" if you dont make it that. you can work your way up always. its not like she'd have to sign a contract or anything. tell her to do it!!! nothings ever forever. if its not her cup of tea, she can find something else. and besides, it'd take a very very long time to realize your job is dead end. good luck to you both:) *edit. working at the post office she'd be making at least three times more than waitressing. not to mention not as good benefits, sucky hours, etc.
  4. NO NO NO NO NO. Her mother is crazy. I'm dumbfounded that someone would even think of giving up $57k a year for any place that your main pay is in tips. You can advance in the post office just like any other job. Plus the experience could help her get a job somewhere else if she doesn't like it. Please tell your fiance that the post office is a good company to work for. I worked as a sorter when I was 19. I really enjoyed it. If she feels compelled about what her mom says then tell her to at least take the job and then she can look at other careers in the future.
  5. Her mother considers $57k per year STARTING pay as dead end? Her mother is NUTS! Yes, it's dead end in that there is no prestige to it, but then, there's not a lot in waitressing, either!
