Moving, How Does USPS Mail Change of Address Work?

I recently filed a change of address form w/ USPS. I put the date to start forwarding mail as the 1st day at my new residence. I still have about a week before moving. Is the mail that is supposed to be delivered to my current residence still going to be delivered to my current residence during the last 5-6 days leading up to the day I move or did they just stop all mail to this residence for the time being and resend it during the 1st day at my new residence? I don't want to lose any mail, and I'm not sure how it works, could anyone clarify? Thanks.

  1. hmmm
  2. they hold your mail for you and send it to the new address on the date you said (the 1st), you have to check the hold mail option on the card you filled out though
  3. It will continue to be delivered to your old address until the new date. If you feel you have been missing deliveries, just go to the central PO where you pick up mail after vacation hold.
  4. They will still deliver mail to your current address until you move, after that they will forward to your new address.
  5. You might lose a piece or two, but the majority will go right here it's supposed to go. I have moved more times than i can count. The only time it never follows me is when i forget the change of address form. You can always leave a note in the old place with your new address for the new tenant. They might or might not see it, but it can't hurt.
