How long does it take to mail a letter from Connecticut to California?

For example, if the person that lives in Connecticut sends out the letter/item tomorrow, would it be possible to recieve the item before January 2, 2008? AND - how many days does it take to mail a letter from Connecticut to California? Thanks :)
