I need to find a good job in the N Dallas area but am in San Diego. What is the FASTEST way to go about this?
I am in San Diego as I got out of the Navy here and my wife's family lives here, so we stayed while I was trying to find employment in the N Dallas area where we plan to move. That wasn't working as planned and I came back here to San Diego to take the Postal Exam. That was in Nov, and I have yet to hear from them and am getting tired of waiting. Here is my background: crap jobs (grocery bagger, fast food, etc..), security (unarmed, do not hold Guard Card) (1yr), Navy Electronics and Aviation Electronics (3yrs), Navy Personnelman (HR type stuff, paperwork, clerical) (3yrs), and now am working as a Marine Electrician building new ships (3mo now). I am looking to find a decent paying job ($18+, +better!) in the North Dallas area, but these website jobfinders don't seem to do much and I have put my resume on most of them. I have also put my resume directly on companies websties with no response. What is the best and fastest way to go about finding a good job in another state?

- When I was job searching online I was stuck until I widened my search. I knew what I wanted to do, but started looking for any job I was qualified for. For me the most important thing was to find any job that would pay the bills, and then continue my search once I was financially stable. I don't want to spend the rest of my life at the job I have right now, but I can pay my mortgage until I find my dream job. Everyone I have talked to about job searching says the most helpful tool is your "network." In addition to looking on-line, talk to everyone you know that you are looking for work in the Dallas area. Who knows, someone may be the brother of someone who has a friend that lives next-door to someone who works at a place looking for electricians. If you do find a crappy but well paying job that lets you move there, you will widen your network and have better chances of find a good job. Living in the area will help other ways too. Employers prefer live interviews to phone ones, or just looking at a resume. As far temporary jobs the higher paying ones tend to be the jobs that require physical work that no one else wants to do. The night jobs pay better to. I have a friend who drove a forklift unloading trucks. He worked third shift because it paid 50% more. I don't know exactly what you have tried, but there might be more jobs through the Navy in Dallas. I got several job notifications from the Navy looking for engineering type positions. They weren't in the place I was looking, but the offers weren't too bad. Also you can emphasize the fact that you were in the military with any employers.
