How do I know whether the mailman will drop a package off at my door or in my mailbox?

I've ordered books online before, and the mailman has always dropped the package off in my mailbox. However, this time, I purchased three dresses and a shirt. Would he still be leaving the package in my mailbox? Or do I need to sign for it when he comes to my door?
