What's going to happen to my mail since the mailman broke my mailbox?

The mailbox won't close. The mailman somehow broke it on accident but didn't tell me. I must admit that the mailboxes in our apt. complex are very raggedy & old. I told the landlord about it. They said they were going to fix it.

7. Then what's the problem? Your mail will still be delivered to your mailbox. Be sure you get it before someone else does. Unless your landlord fixes it pretty quickly. In which case no problem.

11. According to U.S.P.S. federal guidelines mail is not supposed to be delivered to an unsecured mailbox. The mailman can hand you your mail directly if you are there when he makes his rounds. He must legally be sure that you are the recipiant of the mail for that box so they ask to see an official state or federal id. You could also have your mail sent to a post office box or "general delivery" at your zip code's post office and then pick it up there. Your landlord is supposed to have you mail box fixed within a reasonable amount of time.
12. Since your landlord will fix it and that they know, I'm sure your mail will go to like the front desk and they will let you pick it up there. Don't worry. At the worst, the post office or someone might hold it until it gets fixed. Don't worry! Good Luck!

14. If the box cannot be opened, then the carrier will hold your mail for a week or two before returning it as undeliverable. If the box cannot be closed, the carrier may deliver it unless you request otherwise. You should leave a hold mail request (this can be done at the USPS Web site) if you think it will take more than a day or so to have the box repaired.

17. Watch for the post man if you are at home and explain that he needs to leave your mail in a temporary container till your box is repaired. Find a container of some kind and put your name & Address or box number on it. If he doesn't agree to that then tell him since he broke it you must call the post office.
18. If they cannot deliver it, they will place a note inside telling you what to do.
19. The US Postal Service is not required to deliver mail if there is not a mail recepticle meeting their guidelines. They may still deliver it, or you may have to go to the post office to pick it up.
20. Well if the mailman broke it he probably must remember that yours is the one he broke...... then he must just put the mail in. ( I have the same issue i have condo so i can imagine ur confusion ugh) if not u can meet the mailman at the place u get the mail and just tell him how to deal with problem till its fixed! I hope the problem is less a bother : )
21. He will probably leave it in the office and put a slip of paper in the box telling you so.
