Postal Letter

Booked delivery with DHL but a private car turns up?

I've had a couple of incidences where the company I've bought from have booked for DHL to deliver my parcel - I was very surprised to see a private car pull up with my parcel instead of the expected large yellow delivery van. A letter was also delivered to us like this too and we were quite wary at first as to why it wasn't the postman who delivered it. Could anyone explain? Many thanks.

  1. DHL use a variety of different delivery drivers. Smaller packages, letters and items not being delivered on a normal delivery route are delivered by private drivers. DHL hire people outside of the normal company - like i guess paper deliverers. DHL vans are only used for bigger items and deliveries where other items are being delivered in the same area!
  2. Since DHL bought Securicor they have got rid of a significant proportion of company employed drivers. Instead they use contract and agency drivers, some using liveried vehicles, some using rental vehicles and some using their personal cars and vans. It's cheaper for DHL to do it this way although you don't get the same level of service. Contract drivers are only interested in delivering/collecting the maximum number of packages in the minimum amount of time. If that means throwing your fragile item down the back of the van, so be it...
