Postal Letter

How do I stop receiving the mail of previous renters at my apartment?

My boyfriend and I just moved in to our first apartment. Our mailbox is constantly PACKED with the mail of past residence. We’re still receiving mail for more than 4 previous renters. A lot of it is junk mail and although it’s annoying, I usually just throw it out, but I’m reluctant to toss certain pieces of mail that look more important. How would I go about “returning to sender”? Can I just write it somewhere on the mail? Is there a way to prevent it from coming?

  1. Go to the branch of the Post Office where your mail comes from and tell them to return any mail that doesn't have your name on it.
  2. return to sender will not do anything you need to open this mail and contact the company sending it and tell them that this person no longer lives there
  3. Opening the mail and destroying it are both considered federal offenses. Maybe no one cares, but why risk it? The Post Office suggests writing "Not at this address" on the mail and putting it back in the box.
