Is starting a career at FedEx a good move?
I'm a recent college grad with a degree in business, however, office jobs do not appeal to me and I cant see myself stuck behind a cubicle. Anyway one day I want to own my own company and I heard that Fedex drivers are basically independent business owners. After one year or so they are eligible to bid for and operate their own routes. This is what appealed to me and why I applied to the job. Do you think it was a waste getting my degree? Does this look like a promising path for an entrepreneurial person like myself? Thanks

- Excellent choice! This is the cream job of the future. You will not have to worry about getting layed off. Also they have very good retirement pensions.
- Those driving jobs are hard to get. At UPS, the people basically work as package handlers for a couple of years until a driving job opens up. Driving jobs are sort of regarded as the top job you can get without a college education. Once you are in the job though, you'll get good pay and a pension. It's sort of a stretch to say that they are independent business owners. You won't really have a boss yelling at you though. Just driving around. That might be a good choice if you like being outside.
- Fedex ground routes are independently owned and operated. Retirement plans and such are entirely upto the owner/operator. (basically, contract work) Fedex Express routes are not independently owned. You work directly for the Fedex company, therefore have access to pension benefits.
