cheapest way to send books from ny to cali?

I know the US postal service has flat rate boxes, and they have the media mail option. is one of these options the cheapest way to send books from nyc to california? are there better options ?

1. I remember the US mail used to have a special rate for books. I'd consult with them first.
2. There is no cheaper (or slower) option than media mail. Expect it to take one to two weeks to get there, minimum. The books also have to have no advertising in them. If they contain advertising (magazines, etc.) then you will have to send them as "bound printed matter" which costs more. This is old information, and the post office seems to change their rules on a whim, so check out usps.com or ask your local post office.
3. Use the USPS Media Mail class. Real inexpensive per pound.
