Postal Letter

Do you know anything about getting a job at the post office?

I've been thinking lately of becoming a postal worker for the US Postal Service. Ideally, I would like to deliver mail, however, I don't know to much about the job other than I would have to take a civil service test. My questions are: 1.) What are their usual starting pay for that position or any position for that matter (I would be working in Ohio) 2.) I've heard in some instances, there are waiting lists to get into the Postal Service - is that really true? 3.) What exactly is on the Civil Service Test and do I take that first and then apply with the Post Office or vice versa? 4.) Have you or anyone you know worked for the postal service? If so, did they like their job? I am 25 years old

  1. Read through http://www.usps.com/employment/welcome.htm?from=home&page=employment for info. My nephew got a job a year or so ago, in Ohio, delivering mail. He's in his late 20's. He started at something around $19 an hour. He is "part time" and fills in, doesn't have his own regular route, but works more than a normal "full time", often 6 days a week. He loves it. He had applied and taken the civil service test a couple years before he was called for an interview. Once he was called, interviewed, and had his drug test, he started within a few weeks.
  2. You have to take a test. Based on the test you may be called back. You will generally start off as a casual which means no guranteed hours and a lot of hours at xmas time. You take the test after you apply and that isnt saying they hire you just b/c you get to take the test. My sister has worked there for umpteen years. They are racist as hell (you should be fine...if youre not a minority) and the politics are crazy. If youre not a full time person the hours are crazy. The PAY/BENEFITS are WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Good luck
  3. <<1.) What are their usual starting pay for that position>> Letter Carriers start at about $44,000 a year, for the exact hourly rate you can check at NALC.org (Letter Carrier Union) 2.) I've heard in some instances, there are waiting lists to get into the Postal Service - is that really true? Yes, hiring is based upon test scores. Veterans get extra points 3.) What exactly is on the Civil Service Test and do I take that first and then apply with the Post Office or vice versa? There is no civil service test for the USPS. The USPS is a quasi-independent agency governed by FERS (federal employee retirment system). You can find the test booklet at most libraries and bookstores. 4.) Have you or anyone you know worked for the postal service? If so, did they like their job? I've worked for the USPS for over 20 years. You will work for your money! I love customers, but I don't like the managment system at all.
