Do you think the postal service is becoming obsolete?
Do you think we should switch to electronic mail, why or why not? And what do you propose we could do to make up for all the jobs that would be lost if the postal service did shut down? True but to send actual items such as money or gifts you can use UPS or Fed Ex. Oh and the reason I ask is because the postmaster general says if the fed doesn't help out that the postal service is going to run out of money.

- no. Digital messaging has too many bugs to be viable and/or reliable.
- Eventually it may come to this, but as for now there is still a large portion of the population without internet or fax access.
- No, maybe for some things...but with more and more people working at home and selling junk on ebay, the postal service is getting more and more busy all the time
- no i do not think it will become obsolete. because not everyone have a computer or a phone. with that said, it wouldnt be fair to those who are not technologically advanced or savvy. until the day comes where everyone is literally given a free computer and free internet access...the mailing system we have now will not be going away.
- no because then if you send packages or cash....it has to be delivered anyways.....it cant just pop up like an email right?
- no not all of the emails are great. some of them have bugs of virus's or have a limit on the mailbox
- No because we still need to send and recieve parcels in the mail. Not sure how these can be sent through a computer?
- not yet. Sometime in the future it will. Its funny because I recently had a birthday party so I sent all the invites through email, and didn't have to spend a dime on invitations or stamps....then I forgot about the grandparents. I felt bad but I called to invite them just in time. As for postal workers, I think a program to pay for schooling so they can learn a different trade would help.
- In my neighborhood, our postal carrier is too lazy to put everyone's mail in the mailboxes, so he just throws it on top of them and leaves it as a free for all to be sorted, which results in mail being stolen. That said, I am all for electronic mail. The postal service wouldn't be at a loss completely as there are packages and things that need to be shipped. I don't think the postal service needs to be shut down, but I do think there has to be some serious changes in order to keep it going.
- it will take awhile but they are losing to email faxes &fedex i drive semis for the post office at xmas time and see a major slo down over the years, if not for junk mail they would really be hurting now not to mention the repulican party thinks mail should be privitazed like every thing else igive them 10 maybe 15 yrs before computers&fedex win
- Not necessarily. We need to send tangible things once in awhile, and the USPS gives a good rate for those.
- Answer to first question : Yes, the postal service as it is known today is obsolete. They need to revamp the "system"...and be more efficient. With automatization, things should be more efficient. The postal service is still working the same way they did in the early 20th century. Electronic mail is not always effective, especially when mailing packages or confidential mail or something that requires special handling. The post office will never shut down, nonetheless with the changes, less workers will be needed and then as the new system is introduced, they should put a hiring freeze and the workers with seniority that retires should not be replaced. The post office is not intosavings money, they will still stay doing the same things over and over. They are going to increase the postage soon in order to pay the pay raise that the postmaster general is giving himself ...Mmm, anothr AIG ? Right we can still use UPS (which is not doing too well) or Fed-Ex too.
