Postal codes in the united kingdom?

can someone explain how did they do the postal codes in the UK, is there some kind of pattern cuz i cant figure it out sometimes they use the N,W,E,S and sometimes they just have a shortcut name for each city please HELP

  1. London has North, South, East, West postcodes as you've spotted. The rest of the country has an area code normally relating to the nearest administrative city, followed by a number. For example BN - Brighton, PL - Plymouth, LS -Leeds etc.
