How can companies afford free shipping?

like if you go on www.dealextreme.com You will find like half of there stuff $1 each. I order from there all the time and I can order like 1 thing and they still ship it. The thing is they are not my next door neighbor, they actually ship from china. Are the post office giving special deals or something? They use USPS
