Postal Letter

How does the post office weigh all of the mail individually?

This does not make sense to me. With the milions of letters a day going thru a post office - how is it possible to weigh each letter individually????

  1. How is it possible to read the address of each letter and know where to deliver it? It only takes a second or two to weigh each piece of mail.
  2. The front line of the post office is the window clerks. Letters that are dropped in the boxes are processed by employees at each station. For the most part if a letter is overweight(requiring more postage) you can tell because it will a bulky envelope or oversized. If an employee suspects that it is overweight it is then weighed.
