I use way too many unsafe programs. And currently don't have a virus protection program. But I don't want to ask my mom to pay for one. Help please?

- www.avast.com :) download the free home edition and register it for free!!
- AVG Its free and the best.
- Avast! or Avira. You should also scan with MalwareBytes and AdAware. All three are free or have a free home version that is fully functional.
- Norton 360 is the one I have. It works nice for me. You should at least download a free trail version for 30 days, while you buy your new anti-virus :D
- Now i will tell you the truth. There is no such thing as a best free anything. People seem to think they can get something for nothing. Sorry, It doesn't work that way. Never has never will. If you want a AV that really works your gonna have to pay for it. Junk like AVG will not keep your computer safe. Especially AVG. AVG is the worst AV on the net. Only noobs hackers, virus writers and the stupid endorse it. It has no root kit protection and trojan mal ware walks right by it undetected most times. Avast is a little better. It has real time protection. But it's weak. Avira is a little better. But it's missing heuristic scanning in the free version. If it's free it's free for a reason. It has security holes in it or it wouldn't be free. Talk to your mother and buy a good one. Get Kaspersky or the paid version of Avira. For 35 bucks a year you can't beat it with a club. And please, Don't listen to these AVG pushers.
- I have used Avira free for a long while now and it has never let me down. Not only that, Avira free usually tops the review list for detection. I would never change, why should I when Avira does exactly what it is deigned for...A good browser is also as important as an anti virus and firewall. Firefox is my favorite browser. One anti virus will not stop all malware, just a fact. You need to also use free scanners like, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, A-squared, and Ccleaner periodically to clean up malware.
- For starters, lose the "unsafe programs." No anti-virus will protect you if you are putting yourself in the line of fire; sooner or later, anti-virus or no anti-virus, you will be bitten. A very effective way of avoiding a great deal of infections is to avoid the source to begin with. Secondly, take Lex Luthor's advice. All the freebies are incomplete one way or another; "the best" and "free" do not go together when referring to anti-virus software.
- Consumer Reports's top honors 2009 went to a free three-pack of Avira's AntiVir antivirus program, Microsoft's Windows Defender antispyware software and the Spamfighter antispam program. Avira AntiVir Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open "locked" files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal--no more baby-sitting. AntiVir is still challenging to fully uninstall. Despite these hang-ups and the nag screen that follows definition file updates, AntiVir offers such effective protection and a well-rounded set of features that as long as the updates keep coming, it'll be our first line of defense. Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive. SPAMfighter has partnered up with Microsoft to build the strongest, safest, and most effective anti spam filter on the market.
