What does the mailman do with packages when no one is home?

A mailman comes to a house with a package from Forever 21, but no one anwsered the door. The mailman didn't leave the package there next to the door. What happened to the package... what is the mailman going to do with it?

1. The next time that the mailman passes from there , must ask the recepient if he had received the package ..
2. He sent it probaly next door to somoene to look after it while ur away. but they give it to you.
3. Sometimes they do just leave it at the door. Other times they will leave a notice on your door saying they came at such-and-such time and no one was home so we will try again at this time and then come back at or around that time. The package likely just stays in the truck.
