What is the protocol for UPS packages being dropped into a United States Postal Service's drop box?

If a UPS package is accidentally put into a drop box at the post office (USPS), what should be done to re-acquire that package or to have the package handed over to UPS? What would the post office do with such a package? Thanks!

1. This happens all the time. The USPS telephones UPS and informs them that they have a package to pick up at the PO. UPS then picks up the package (however, it may be a couple of days before UPS picks it up).
