Why has the Daily Mail not been shut down?

Surely by now the daily mail should have been forced to stop printing their bile. Sensationalism Hate-mongering Fear-mongering Xenophobia and straight out misinformation and even one ridiculous article one of my friends pointed me to, saying how the emo subculture was a death cult/religion where evil teenagers believed when they die they go to the "black parade". Now, I'm no emo, nor do i sympathize, but I know enough to realize that's straight out BS. So why has this filth not been removed from our shelves?

  1. Our country has free media, you should really be grateful because the laws which allow the daily mail to print what they want mean that all papers are free to print what they want
  2. You are starting to sound like one of it's readers.
  3. I agree, it is filth. But it is legal filth, we have a free press that can print what it sees fit to print, unfortunately they print lies, slander and muckraking fear mongering bollocks. That is the Brit press for you, lovely bunch aren't they?
  4. Freedom of the press, I suppose. I could say the same about their cousins at the Express... I only read the Sunday Express and that's because mum has it there when I go around for Sunday lunch as I do most weeks, because we like doing the general knowledge crossword. Inevitably I find myself explaining to her why the front page story is either scaremongering or something that anyone who knows about it (I'm a civil servant) has known about for months and therefore isn't news. In an ideal world both papers would be shut down for printing lies, but this is just the downside of having freedom of speech :(
