What happens when a no one picks up a package from the post office?

I ordered a package with USPS and i am out of town. Im checking the stauts online and it says Arrived at post office nov 22. I wont be back for a while and i was wondering what happens when a package isnt picked up after a long period of time.

1. You can call your local USPS and tell them why you can't make it and let them know when you can. They send it back to the original address if you don't pick it up during their last day that they'll hold it for you.
