What happens to a letter if the postal code is wrong?

The postal code is wrong by one letter, but the incorrect postal code does exist. It was sent my courier through Canada's postal system within Canada. It's certified mail, meaning the addressee needs to sign to confirm the acceptance of the package, which is mailed back to the sender.

1. They will return to sender.
2. usually sent to code and when returned they look for correct code. not sure how canada works but would think the same.
