Can you send packages 24/7 at Automated Postal Centers?

I went to the post office the other night around 11 PM to send some packages with the Automated Postal Center in the lobby. When I tried to press mail a letter/package, it said "cannot perform this action right now". Last time I used one of these a couple of years ago you could mail packages 24 hours a day. The thing that makes me think this may have just been a fluke is that it was Tuesday and Veteran's day was the next day. I thought that maybe the just shut it down on days like this because the package receptacle would get full or something. Or maybe it is an anti-terrorism thing and the post office has a new policy that all packages have to be accepted during business hours. Has any one used one of these recently after hours to mail a package?

1. More than likely there was some sort of jam in the machine, or it was out of labels. People let their kids mess with those things so they often break.
