Why doesn't the government mandate that the US Postal service be open on the weekends to create more jobs?
And boost the economy?

- They are open on saturday...and they are already losing money...if you need to pay more employees then your losing even more money...
- Boost the economy by paying new employees money that we don't have? Try thinking harder.
- Good idea...
- Because it's a SERVICE and people are at work all week long, so the weekend is a good time to ship things. There's no good reason not to privatize the USPS though. FedEx and UPS already have the operations in place. One just needs to set some grounds rules to govern how multiple providers for first class mail will interact. Besides, make-work jobs do NOT boost the economy. Not even a little. This is basically the Broken Window fallacy.
- While on the surface that is a good idea, you have to understand that the postal service just closed offices because they are in financial trouble. So, they need to be open on weekends (they are already open some hours on Saturday) and will be paid with what money. Oh, just add to the national deficit you say, well that is a huge part of the problem with the current economy. I just hope China doesn't realise they can destroy us simply by calling in our debts.
- Why don't you hire people to create more jobs? Because you can't afford to. The Post Office, the one government institution that is supposed to be self sufficient, is losing money. There is not enough mail. Not enough business. There is no justification for creating more jobs in the Post Office. Want there to be more jobs? There have to be more people willing to own businesses. Jobs come from people owning businesses. Right now the business climate in America is very hostile to business ownership, because schools, movies, and the media have made successful people and corporations the enemy. Have you ever worked for a poor person?
- Honey, the USPS has more workers than it needs now. Do you know how much it would cost to deliver and handle mail every single day?
