Postal Letter

Do postal workers collect mail from the blue collection boxes on President's Day?

I know for sure that in some cities (such as NYC) postal workers will empty mail from the blue collection boxes on federal holidays and the mail will be sorted and postmarked, even though there is no mail delivery on these days. Do all post offices abide by this practice?

  1. No, they don't. Most post offices are closed on federal holidays and there is absolutely no one around the post office. Bigger cities like NYC may have a few contractors go around and get the mail for the main post office in the city. The post offices will collect the mail on the next business day.
  2. There will be no collection from the boxes on Presidents' Day. It will not be postmarked and sorted either. Perhaps in some of the very large cities, they "might" have some collections on the "larger" holidays. IF mail is collected from these boxes, it is done by a POSTAL EMPLOYEE, not a contract person. POSTAL EMPLOYEES are the only ones that may have one of the keys that can open the collection boxes.
