How do you mail something from a mailbox without a flag?

I have recently moved into a house with a mailbox attached beside the door. At all the other places I have lived there has been a mailbox on the curb with a flag to raise when you mail something. I have put something in it for 3 days now and the postal carrier has not taken it. Since the box has no flag how do they know something is in there? How do I mail something from this mailbox?

1. I have the same kind of mailbox. I fold the letter over the edge and close the top so you can see it poking out.
2. We used to have a mailbox like that and we used a clothespin to clip the mail in a way that the delivery person could see it!
