Postal Letter

Can someoomne file my taxes by using my w2s?

i have not received my w2s and i'm afraid there has been a mix up in the mail. i moved and i did provide a forwarding address with the postal service. i contacted my former employer and they told me that i have to wait until february 15th to reapply for another copy. can someone file my taxes illegally if they have possession of my w2s?

  1. In theory, no. If they take them somewhere to file, they would be required to show ID. However they would be able to file online or by mail. When you moved, did you fill out a mail forwarding request with the post office? If so, they will either be forwarded to you or returned to your employer. Just in case, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask them if a return has been filed with your name/SSN. I would also keep an eye on your credit report for any suspicious activity since if someone did get your W-2, they also have your SSN.
