Postal Letter

If the USPS can't deliver my mail on Saturday, why in the world does it still have a monopoly on regular mail?

I am tired of hearing how the email killed the USPS. Let's get real. They are losing money because of rude employees, overpaid unions, stone age tech (compared to FedEx and UPS), and a general lack of innovation. They have a monopoly. By federal law, competitors "are not allowed to deliver non-urgent letters and may not use U.S. Mail boxes at residential and commercial destinations" (Wikipedia).

  1. they don't have a monopoly, you answered that. They are bad because they are run by government, and government is always inefficient compared to private enterprise.
  2. the USPS is a federal agency. The volume of mail that it handles would overwhelm all of the other carriers (ups, fedex, etc.) put together. USPS does deliver on Saturday. You haven't been paying attention.
  3. It costs 44 cents to get a letter from anywhere in the US to anywhere else in the US. What do you want for 44 cents? What else in the US costs 44 cents any more?
  4. Because the USPS is regulated by the US Government. Get used to it. If Obama gets his way, we'll be seeing more regulated companies and services.
