What is the difference between FedEx Express and FedEx Ground?

So..I'm asking this question because I asked another one and said FedEx Freight instead of FedEx Express so... I was looking into applying for a job with FedEx. I found one for FedEx Ground but its a 40 minute commute vs one I found for FedEx Express, which is a 20 minute commute. I applied for FedEx Express since its closer, but I'm wondering what the difference is between the two, jobwise AND shipping wise. I'm just curious as to if I'll be lifting heavy boxes or small boxes etc. Any help would be appreciated. Preferably someone who works for FedEx. Thanks =]

  1. Are you applying to be a package handler or a driver? There is not much difference in package handling - you are an employee, get there earlier, and sort the boxes for the driver. Boxes generally tend to be a little smaller since its express mail. Driving is where the difference is. With Express you are an employee and work hourly. You drive a company truck, get minimal benefits, and finish at a certain time everyday. With Ground you are working for a contractor (someone who personally owns that route) and you work until you are done delivering your packages. Most Ground drivers get paid salary or per package, rarely is it done hourly. The contractor owns the truck and pays you, not FedEx. You usually don't get benefits (aside from workman's comp), but that completely depends on the contractor. There are benefits to both, but personally I'd lean towards Express. =) Hopefully that helps.
