What Do Other Aussies Think Of Australia Posts New Plans For Our Mail?

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/breaking-news/postal-deliveries-could-be-scrapped/story-e6freuyi-1225852291188 I can see this causing problems for housebound people, but how will it affect you & your family if they do bring this change about?

  1. I live in TAsmania, fairly rural but 3km from the post office and there is no mail delivery in our area. I have to go to the post office daily to collect mail - they have run out of mail boxes so the postal staff have to keep it in little cubby holes alphabetically until you come to collect. At least we save on mail holding fees when we go on holiday!
  2. im an aussie living in Canada and it has a similar system, works ok but as you mentioned hard for people that are not mobile its a bit-ch when there is 4 foot of snow and its minus 25 lol
  3. Which idiot thought of this nonsense ( I self censored what I wanted to say) Such a dumb nut plan would lead to chaos - traffic congestion with people driving to the central location. parking problems extreme. Elderly would suffer as how they can get to the post boxes every day to check on mail is beyond me. There is more I could say but very simply ANY politician who supports this plan will become an ex politician
  4. I'm pleased to see that they're saying that it's only for new developments in outer Metropolitan areas and that no existing communities will be affected "at this time", but like any idea where there are big cost savings, it's bound to be the thin end of the wedge and we can count on it spreading. I know it's said that the system is in use in other countries, but I bet it isn't in outer suburban residential developments like is being planned for here. Many people in rural areas (like where I live) already drive to their mailbox because the front gate is a long way from the house so collecting the mail from a community mail hub wouldn't be much of a change for people like us, but expecting that of residents in ordinary residential developments is a huge ask. What about people who are housebound or mothers with a tribe of little kids who'll need to be bundled into the car? Hopefully communities will step up to the plate to help people who can't easily get to the mail hub, but not everyone will be happy about having neighbours collect their mail and others won't know how to arrange for it to be done. Not everyone has good, caring neighbours and in a brand new development, how do you know who you can trust? The article also says that SMS messages will be sent to mobiles when there is mail to collect - what about people like everyone in our area who have such poor mobile reception that we can't leave our phones switched on when we're at home? Ivory tower decision makers have NO idea! It's a rotten idea and typical of the erosion of services that we should be able to take for granted.
  5. If you think about it , it's the outer areas that need the delivery because they usually have further to travel to reach a post office.. One thing you can be certain of , even if they save a squillion dollars , postal costs won't come down !
  6. I think it's a good idea. I rent two mail boxes at the current moment. One for our city residence & another for our country holiday home. Deliveries to a mailbox are a pain in the rear, Regardless of what stickers one may affix to the mailbox, they get stuffed with junk mail & community newspapers. Items too big to fit in the box are left outside & therefore become a security risk. I would not be without a mailbox. Have not had mail deliveries for years. Some people will squawk hardship. They can collect their mail when they, or one of their rellies, attend the local Centrelink office. Anyway, what about people in the bush - they have had to manage with collecting their mail from the P.O. for donkey's years. Me thinks the only ones who will be whinging will be cityfolk who have to put up with an inconvenience born by country folk for years.
  7. I live in South Western Victoria, just outside a regional city, and we don't get house to house mail deliveries. Mail is delivered to the local store which is 1 1/2 kms away. Until I moved out here I was in Canberra. Unless parcels or bulky mail came by Australia Post Courier we had to pick them up directly from a post office 6 kms away, difficult when working full-time. To overcome this problem I had an Australia Post mailbox. All in all, not much difference.
  8. I read about this in The Sunday Mail, and quite obviously, the person who thought this crap up is a d/ckhead. It won't affect me or my family seeing as we live on a farm outside of town and drive into town to get the mail from a PO Box anyway, but why would they make *everyone* get one of these? Of course it's going to cause problems for housebound people. Not only that, they people who made it up are like ''it's going to lower fuel emissions'' or some other crap like that because there will be no posties on their bikes to ''pollute'' the air each morning (by the way, their bikes are fuel-efficient). No, idiots, it won't. It will cause more as every single person will hop into their own cars and drive there separately, not only extra pollution, but extra traffic.
  9. I see no problems. The only mail I use is e-mail.
