Can you leave the mailman a note to leave a registered package?

Is it possible to leave a note for the mailman to leave the package at the door? Or does this vary from mailman to mailman? I have a package coming, its not worth THAT much, I had no choice but Registered Airmail and packages never get stolen near our house. So I would prefer not waiting at home all day for the delivery.

1. Registered mail must be signed for. Either someone will have to be home to sign for it, or you will have to go to the PO to sign for it and get it.
