What are the requirements for postal jobs?

As I saw my usual mail carrier the other day I wondered, what does it take to be a mail carrier? Do you simply apply like most other jobs or is a degree involved, special training ect.. Ive heard they make pretty good pay and have excellent benefits packages and seem interested in learning more about it as a profession. Can anyone please share more any information with me. The postal web address gives me little information on how to apply. Most post offices do not have information on applying.

1. You don't see much information about applying because the USPS is not hiring. At my facility in LA (lower Alabama) we haven't had any new hires since May, 2006. An exam must be taken and passed in order to be considered for any USPS position. You must also pass a drug test and background check.
