Sending letters and Parcels to APO AE address from UK?

Hi. I live in London , UK and would like to send my friend who is in the US ARMY letters and parcels. He gave me an APO address to send to. HE said that's all I need to put on the letters and parcels. When I went to send it, the UK postal workers don't know where to send the letters to. They looked VERY confused. Do I need to put Army Post Office, USA under the APO, AE address ?

1. APO is for the City, AE is for the State when filling out the address, then put USA as the country. It will then go to a valid US address before being shipped to him.
