What are 44 cent stamps used for?

Obviously, stamps are used to mail items, but the 44 cent stamps look really big as opposed to the regular 'Forever' USPS First Class stamps I see on a lot of letters. Are they used more for heavier packages? What's the price system according to different stamps?

1. The 44 cent stamp is the same value as the forever stamp. Either can be used to mail a letter weighing up to one ounce. Visit the postal service's website for all of the various rate stamps and their uses.
