can all government employees retire after 20 years of service?
My mother has worked for the US Postal Services for 11 or more years and then went on to work for the county we live in (which is also a govt job) for 13+ years. I know that when you are in the military 20 years you can retire with all your benefits so I was wondering can she retire with all her benefits now. She turned 57 this year. Thanks for any feedback, God Bless!!!!!!!

- It used to be the United States Post Office and then the government cut it loose. Postal workers get more perks than most general GS U.S. employees. Working for the U.S. postal system, a state and a county are different entities with different requirements. I would say no. She may be able to look at drawing an annuity from the post office. I would check into that. Working for a county, may or may not be of help. Here, it wouldn't be much more than working for WalMart.
- Not likely. If she was a permanent employee of the Post Office she was probably under the FERS retirement program. FERS is a 401k based system so she would have had to do something with the account when she left the Post Office either draw it out or roll it over. Also the federal, state and local governments all have their own individual retirement program so her county retirement possibilities has no connection with her Postal work history.
