Postal Letter

Why do American postal vehicles have the driver sit on the right side?

Today, while walking down the street, I saw one of those postal trucks with really tall, open doors on the side. Why does the driver sit on the righthand side? This isn't the United Kingdom, after all!

  1. That's so he doesn't have to slide across to the other side of the van to drop mail in roadside mailboxes. (Edit) Also, it is so he does not have to exit into traffic, 'cause he has to get out a lot!
  2. because the mail box is on her right. if sitting on the otherside .. could not reach the box ok..
  3. To be able to better reach the road side mounted boxes for mail. Otherwise they would be on the other side and quite a reach to get to them.
  4. Maybe so they can be by the curb?
  5. The postal workers need to drive on the right side of the road just like everyone else. So in order for them to be able to reach the mailboxes from inside their vehicles, they have to sit on the right side as well.
  6. So their union butt does not have to work too hard.
  7. because the driver sits on the left
