Postal Letter

If I issue a temporary change of address at USPS, will my mail stop going to my old address?

I'm a little annoyed because mail was sent to what WILL be my new address, but there is a tenant still in it and I am not moving there for a few months yet. The company seemed to misunderstand that I won't actually be living there until August and sent mail to me there anyway... So I'm embarrassed that the company used the address because the landlord called me about it. So, if I do a temporary change, then will mail bypass that address and come straight to my home? I can then specify to end the temporary change of address on my actual move-in date. Obviously next time I just won't give anyone my new address until I'm actually in it...
