Postal Letter

Is there a specific rule for state postal codes?

I mean, is it always the first letter and the second constinent, etc. Because I have a test on us states, postal codes, and capitals tomorrow in history. Thanks in advance!

1. Yes. I am going to use my zip code for example. (28012) 28- That is my "postal zone" and when looked up it shows that I am in central north carolina 1- means that I am in the 1 area in the cental nc zone. 12- mean that I am in the 12 area of the 1 area in the central nc zone
