Postal workers, what happens to them when the closing starts ?
The U.S. Postal service is planning major cut backs. Government workers cannot be fired. (hello)

- Hopefully they can be laid off as the bloated bureaucracy cannot afford them all any longer.
- First, government workers CAN be fired. And are. Much more often than you'd think. In this case, it's not firing. It's a RIF (reduce in force), which is akin to a layoff. In a RIF, it's true that they try to move people to other open positions. But in something like this, there will be more people than open positions. So, yes, people would be "RIF'ed." Typically, that's the least senior ("last in, first out"). I agree that this is not the best approach, however.
- Well if they really can't be fired, somebody ought to give em a broom and let em start sweeping !
