Is there any way legally delivery service can be held accountable?

I recently orderd a text book and it was delivered on a very rainy day. The package and book was left in the rain causing water damage to the book. Is there any way legally a delivery service could be held accountable? I'm not trying to file law suits or anything. I'm just wondering if legally it is only their responsibility to bring that package to its destination and nothing more. If they have an obligation to make sure it doesn't withstand any damage I would like to know.

  1. Most delivery companies are insured. Have you even tried to CONTACT them and ask if they'll reimburse you for it?
  2. You should contact the place that sold you the book. They arranged for the shipping, and they can claim on the shippers insurance policy.
