I'm starting a mail delivery company, pros and cons of leasing a commercial delivery van?

I am a contractor who is about to purchase a route to deliver packages for a company. Should I lease my vehicle? Pros: Newer vehicle, lower payments, lower maintenance, if I sell my business I'm not stuck with a vehicle.... I know I will always have a payment, but with a lease I know that there is a certain amount of miles available a year, but does that apply to delivery companies?? Also, if any maintenance is needed on the vehicle will it be taking care of without any extra cost and will the company provide alternate transportation until my vehicle is ready again?? Thanks for any responses in advance!!

  1. Leasing is not typically designed for those who put a lot of miles on a vehicle.
  2. Leasing is good idea if the mileage you expect to put on the vehicle does not exceed limits on lease agreement. You should instead consider buying a used van to start with. If business generates sufficient income you can then think of buying a new vehicle.
